To Bunt Or Not To Bunt

To Bunt Or Not To Bunt that is one of the questions I'm asking myself.

Our venue is quite large and so far I'm thinking of decorating it with white chinese lanterns, 3 different round sizes, along with fairy lights.

I'm meeting with a lady this weekend who is going to help with the decorations, I'm buying/renting/supplying everything, she'll put it all together for me.

Because it's a surprise wedding I can't rope in friends & family, and because we don't get access until the Friday afternoon, which happens to be when all of my family are arriving from Vic, and I'll be shuttling between home & Newcastle Airport, I was struggling to work out how I was going to manage to decorate everything.

Over the past 3 weeks, my hairdresser, our accountant and a lady at Curves have all suggested I call the same lady to come help, so I did, and we're meeting up this weekend.

One of the things I've been tossing up is bunting, I've been touring around the web quite a bit getting inspiration for decorations, and quite a few photos of bunting, and I'm loving them.

I'm still trying to work out if I have the time and skill to give it a go, but having asked the question at Simple Savings, the girls have filled me with confidence, even pointing me in the direction of a tutorial.

My Mum gave me her old sewing machine at Christmas when she upgraded, and while I haven't sewn a stitch (apart from hand sewing socks, buttons & hems), in over 15 years, I don't think it'd be too much of a struggle to pick it up again!

This weekend I'm heading out wedding dress shopping, well at least to meet with a dressmaker hopefully, and will stop at some Op Shops on the way to see if any sheets or clothes made out of green & white material that would look nice in bunting form.

Not sure if it's a fool's folly to add another thing to the to-do list!  But we'll see anyway!

  1. I love bunting and am planning on making some in the next week to use for birthday decorating (actually have a post about it for tomorrow).

I'm also thinking of making a set to put up permanently in the kids room.

There are some amazing tutorials on the net including one for laminated fabric bunting so that it's more weather proof (would be great for outdoor parties).

Good luck with it and I can't wait to see the finished project.

  2. Hi Peta, Thanks :) I'm really looking forward to giving it a go actually, going to make it my Easter weekend project.

The laminated fabric bunting sounds interesting, especially as our wedding is in winter, food for thought!

When we have kids, I'd love to have bunting in their room, it's so festive and lovely.

  3. I love bunting too, am yet to make some for myself. But I will and then use them for special family occasions. Hope you get time to make them Mel, they will look cool.

  4. YOu've gotta bunt! It's my favourite way to make a party a party. I think you'll do fine with any of the tutorials. If you get worried, do a garland rather than a bunting. You can get white florists paper, cut it into strips about 10cm long / 3 cm wide, do a 'pointed / rounded' edge (not too pointy, not too round) and then just tie that sucker onto your string at varying lengths apart. Looks FANTASTIC. x

  5. PS - I have a coloured version on my site that I made for my daughter's mermaid party. It gives you a bit of an idea of what I mean...

  7. Hi Maxabella, I agree, I think I'd really regret it if I didn't do them, picked up a new machine yesterday, so ready to have another go!

Your daughters party decorations look great, love the pompoms. What a gorgeous party!

  8. Hi Mel, congratulaions on your beautiful wedding! I just got engaged two weeks ago and am really keen for a Hunter Valley wedding too, however it looks like it is quite pricey at most venues! I really like the idea of hiring the hall, I was wondering did you have to hire the chairs, tables and cloths etc and approximately how much did it cost to do it? Thanks for your help!

  9. Hi Jess, thanks :)
    Congrats on your engagement!
You're so right, alot of the venues are VERY pricey! That's why we went the hall.
The hire fee included the chairs & tressle tables, I hired in the round tables, and bar tables & stools, and white tablecloths. Then purchased all the other decorations, most on Ebay, worked out heaps cheaper than hiring!
The hall, to hire from Friday 2pm - Sunday 5pm was $660 plus a $200 bond which is refunded if all ok.
Fantastic value, we had everyone back on the Sunday am for brekkie and working bee :)
Feel free to email me - melissab9@hotmail.com if you're after more info, happy to help :)
